The 2016 season has proved victorious for the Lady Mats Volleyball team. Team spirit, morale, and talent has carried them to to a successful 20-8 record. The Lady Mats have already played many league games and have competed in multiple tournaments this season. “Our toughest loss this season was definitely in our game versus Campo. On the other hand, we sweeped Bishop O’Dowd, the 2x NCS champs and beat Acalanes by 5,” senior captain Caroline Shafer said. Shafer, as well as the other senior captains, Layne Estes and Blake Sharp, have been holding down the fort in the Matadome and are working to rebuild the team chemistry after losing 6 seniors from last season. “Our major goals for the rest of the season would be to win the rest of our league games and hopefully NCS as well,” Shafer said. With budding talent coming from all classes, the Lady Mats have cultivated a diverse team full of different abilities and strong suits. “Junior Tatiana Luevano and sophomore Lauren Lim have stepped up and are a key part of our team,” Shafer said.
The Lady Mats recently competed in the Stockton Classic tournament and placed an impressive 17th out of 75 teams. The team went 4-1 with victories over Albany, Analy, Acalanes and JFK. “We had a really solid tournament and we played very well as a team,” captain Layne Estes said. “It was pretty tiring for us all because we had to play five games, but it was very rewarding in the end.”
The NCS seeding meeting will be held this Sunday and the Mats are looking to be second seeded behind Marin Catholic. “This means that we will have some home NCS games which will be a really great way to bring the Miramonte community together,” Estes said.
This Thursday, the Lady Mats will battle against rival Campolindo at the Matadome for their Senior Night at 6 o’clock.
