Students Celebrate No Shave November

Marvel at the cultural phenomenon that is No Shave November! This annual celebration of manly facial hair has struck the nation in recent years, including high schools such as Miramonte. But don’t assume that one has to grow facial hair at a high rate to participate; everyone is invited. The point is not to have a full, thick beard, but to celebrate the natural force of hair growth, whether that results in facial artwork or scraggly patches. There is a growing sect of NoShavers who are even trying to convince ladies to put away the razors for a month and let those legs get furry for once. This idea, however, is too radical for most people and will only happen if men step up and participate every year. Anyhow, here are the unofficial rules.

  1. NO SHAVING FOR THE WHOLE MONTH OF NOVEMBER
  2. This includes trimming the neck, cheeks, styling, etc. (Save this for December!)
  3. The shaving hiatus doesn’t have to stop at the end of the month, it can continue forever if you want

See, that’s not so hard. It’s a simple concept and in order to participate, you literally don’t have to do anything!

Jake Ellis

Do you usually sport facial hair?

Yes. I either like to grow out a full beard or chinstrap, sometimes rocking the goatee to look like Edward Norton. And I ALWAYS have sideburns.

Any irritations?

I’ve gotten a little clay stuck in it during crafts, but I’m ok with that. My chin gets too itchy sometimes, I can’t say I’m dreading shaving it.

How have females responded?

My mom silently accepts it. My aunt told me it was disgusting and made me promise I would shave it at the end of the month. More often than not, girls are against it. But the one’s that matter like it.

Any warmth benefits?

It’s protected me in the cold weather; I don’t ever feel wind chills.

Why did you decide to participate in No Shave November?

A beard is fun to play with, basically 24-7 entertainment. I’ve also never made it the whole four weeks before, so I wanted to challenge myself senior year.

Are you competing with anyone?

Only Babak…too many people backed down this year. Like you.

Any future plans? Are you planning to style your face in December?

I’m gonna f**king get rid of it. No styling, it’s way too itchy and in dire need of peacing.

How did your father respond?

Total silence except the occasional “You’re a beast.”

Addison Babak Attar

Do you usually sport facial hair?

I usually tend to show off my 5 o’clock shadow.  I like to grow it out occasionally, but it usually gets cut every day or two, otherwise it starts to scare people.

Any irritations?

The beard itched a lot during the second week of growth, but after that you get used to it. The only really bad thing that happens is getting food stuck. When a lollipop got stuck, it was painful but funny. When I got some gravy in it during Thanksgiving dinner…that was just embarrassing.

How have females responded?

My mom doesn’t really care, she’s used to it by now. Other girls seem not to notice either.

Any warmth benefits?

It’s like a beanie on my face.

Why did you decide to participate in No  Shave November?

Mostly for fun and to check every year to see how long I can grow it.  I see it as a test of personal growth, mental and physical.

Are you competing with anyone?

Last year I had a competition with Roy Erez and Marc Shulz, but neither of them go to Miramonte anymore.  Now I’m just competing with myself.

Any future plans? Are you planning to style your face in December?

My friends have been trying to get me to make some handlebars, but I kind of just want to get rid of it.

Any interesting responses from teachers?

Mrs. Boyko warned me that I might have trouble getting on a plane. I found it a little offensive but I guess her husband had some complications when he tried to with a beard so I won’t hold it against her.

Do you usually sport facial hair?

I usually let it all grow for a week and a half, followed by a comprehensive shave. None of that styling crap for me.

Any irritations?

The neck-beard gets pretty itchy sometimes, but it’s mostly been smooth sailing.

How have females responded?

My mom was surprised that I would follow through on this. She was indifferent at first but now she’s been commenting on the manginess. Not much response from peers, maybe a little swooning.

Any warmth benefits?

I haven’t noticed any temperature, but that’s probably an indication that it’s been keeping me warm.

Why did you decide to participate in No Shave November?

I usually don’t participate in spirit activities at school, so I thought I’d try a “personal spirit activity” that takes more than a day’s effort. Also, I like to make my manliness even more obvious than it already is.

Any future plans? Are you planning to style your face in December?

No solid plans, but I’ve been considering crafting some starburns. This entails shaving all of one’s face except the sideburns, and carving one star into each of them with a high-precision electric razor. Prepare to be starstruck, Miramonte.

How did your father respond?

Unspoken respect, plain and simple.
