Knitting: It’s Not Just For Grandmas Anymore

It’s a Sunday afternoon. Violent winds roar and heavy rains pour outside, but you are safe in your cozy home. You snuggle up on the couch with a warm cup of hot chocolate, and you begin to knit. Despite it’s reputation, knitting is not just for grandmas. It is a fun and relaxing pastime for people of all ages and skill levels.

You don’t know how? Now is the perfect time to learn! This holiday season, make knitting your indoor hobby. If you want to get a gift that your mom will love, nothing is more special and thoughtful than a handmade scarf.

If you’re scared your friends will think you’re weird for knitting, prove them wrong when they see how cute and trendy your scarf is. Knit clothes are in style. In almost any clothing store you are sure to find knit hats, scarves, sweaters and more. Why pay 60-100 dollars when you could make it yourself?

Knitting doesn’t have to be hard. All you need is a pair of needles, some yarn, a tutorial on how to start your scarf and you are good to go. Upon arriving at any local knitting stores, the employees will be eager to help you get started- don’t be scared to join the knitting community.

One great place for beginners is Busy Stix in Lafayette. It provides an open airy atmosphere with a friendly staff and great classes ranging from basic knits to more advanced projects. If you’re looking for more advanced knitting supplies and unique yarns, the Yarn Boutique in Lafayette provides a great selection to create the perfect scarf for a loved one this holiday.

Easy Knit scarf:

Simply YouTube how to do the knit stitch. Cast on 20 stitches with medium thickness yarn and knit until you reach the desired length. Your final step will be to cast off. This scarf is quick and cute!

Rib Stitch Scarf:

This scarf is fairly simple as well, however it requires both the knit stitch and the purl stitch. It is simple but it has a pattern making it more intricate and exciting. Cast on with approximately 20 stitches (more or less depending on your yarn and desired thickness), but make sure it is an even number divisible by four. For this pattern, all you have to do is knit two stitches and purl two stitches. It is slightly more tedious than the easy knit scarf, however you can quickly get the hang of it.
