MHS Spring Musical Opens

The 2011 Miramonte musical The Wizard of Oz will open on March 17. This musical choice appeals to a wide audience because of its likeable characters, musical numbers, and uplifting energy.

Choreography director Lou Farber, musical director Sarah Downs, acting director Heather Cousins, and orchestra director Rick Meyer are hard at work in preparation for this classic production.

“Rehearsals have been progressing well,” said Cousins. “Though it still feels like we have lots and lots of work to do, this is a pretty typical feeling a month before the show is due to open.”

Seniors Jacqueline Garell and Neris Newton will star as Dorothy. Senior Max Fleer, junior Connor McCormick, and junior Carter Soso will play the scarecrow, tin man, and lion, respectively.

The Wizard of Oz features these relatable characters who are in search of a brain, a heart and courage.

“This year, we wanted a classic show, which would appeal to the entire Lamorinda community,” said Cousins. “This show has a little something for everyone.”

The cast, orchestra and tech crew have devoted countless hours in preparation for the show’s upcoming debut.

“All of the students involved are required to do 12 work hours to build sets, sew costumes, or work on publicity,” said Garell.

While sticking to the original script, the musical has twists in store for the audience, including additional characters and musical numbers. A live dog will star as Toto wowing the audience with his professional talent.
“He’s played Toto before for professional theater,” said Newton.
