November is Homophobia Awareness Month. Miramonte Diversity Club and Leadership worked together to put up posters and make announcements to spread awareness of homophobia on campus.

Homophobia is irrationally disliking a person because they are homosexual.

“I don’t think that homophobia is especially prevalent at Miramonte, but it is an issue everywhere and we want to stop the use of ‘gay’ as a negative word,” Diversity Club officer junior Lina Mathkour said.

“We want everyone to feel welcome at school,” Diversity Club president junior Jonathan Chan said.

Other schools in the Acalanes Union High School District are participating as well. Diversity Clubs from all the schools in the district meet once a month to share ideas.

The Diversity Club also organized a Star Activity this month. The Thursday before break at lunch students wrote what they were thankful for on a yellow star and club members strung them up in the hallways.

“We know that the week before break is usually very stressful and we wanted to remind students about the little good things in life,” Mathkour said.
