Track and Field Sprints Into Season

by Aleck Ryner

After a strong 2009 season, the track team is looking to extend its success into this season. Led by captains Peter Buscheck ‘10, Noelle Neason ‘10, Kirby Schulz ‘11, Zach Mayeri ‘10, Gerry Franco ‘10 and Alex Ho ‘10, the team has a strong foundation for success.

“We have really good captains. All of them are great leaders and motivators so I think we will do even better than last year,” said Lauren Henderson ‘11.

In addition to the captains, Nick Vedovi ‘10, Ashraf Mathkour ‘11 and James King ‘10 headline the athletes on the team. King, who recently committed to Navy for football, is one of the team’s best sprinters along with Mayeri. Vedovi and Buscheck are the team’s top distance runners, and Mathkour is one of the best middle distance runners. Neason and Schulz are also some of the best hurdlers on the team.

“We have a pretty balanced team so that helps us a lot in our meets,” said Mathkour.

The team also welcomes impact newcomers like Rebekah Ent ‘13 and John Sommerville ‘13 who will look to contribute to the team success.

“We have pretty good underclassmen so our team will only get better,” said Henderson.

Many members of the team attribute much of their success to the coaching staff led by coach Puppione.

“We are really lucky to have the amount of coaches that we do, everyone gets a lot of attention and extra advice,” said Mathkour.

This season, the main competition for the team are rivals Campo and Acalanes. But many of the athletes are looking forward to a meet over Spring Break, in which some of the team’s best athletes will be going to Arcadia in Los Angeles to compete in a meet. All the team’s athletes are trying to do their best to be one of the athletes who will go.

“All of us are hoping to go, but whatever happens, happens,” said Henderson.

There doesn’t appear to be many weak spots on this team, and after last year’s strong showing, the only place to go is up.
