On Sept 3, the Miramonte Football team defeated the Analy Tigers 21-7 and won the first game of the season. Despite a slow start, the Mats found their rhythm and played a great second half.

“It was exciting,” said Captain and returning starter Anthony Piganelli ‘11, “I feel like although it was our first game and we were a little bit anxious, we ultimately played a solid game and we came away with a good win.”

Returning starter and Captain John Coupin ‘11, was a key factor to Friday’s victory. Coupin scored two touchdowns, made two receptions for 19 yards, and ran 12 times for 99 yards. Piganelli made three receptions for 54 yards, scored a touchdown, and made three PAT kicks. Anderson completed nine of 17 passes and threw for 102 yards. Anderson also rushed for 82 yards on 10 attempts.

Led by Brian Friel ‘11, Blake Swimmer ‘11, Coupin and Piganelli, the team hopes to win league and NCS this year. “We have the talent,” said Anderson, “and if we play right, we can win the whole thing, but we’ve gotta take it one week at a time.”

“We’re a really fast team and we can use that to our advantage,” said Chris Thatcher ‘11, “we also have a lot of bigger kids.”

Thatcher, Ross Dolbec ‘11, Tyler Young ‘11, Kevin Booze ‘12, Beau Davis ‘12, Micah Solit ‘12, and Jack Pietrykowski ‘12 are other returning varsity players that could have impact roles on the team. New varsity players Miles Honens ‘12 and Kelly McGonigle ‘12 could also play important roles.

Las Lomas and Alhambra will pose the biggest threats in the league this year. Players feel confident about defeating Campolindo.

The Mats also defeated Fortuna 35-21 on Sept 11 at the Far West Showcase at Dublin High School, went on to destroy Mission San Jose 62-0 the next weekend, and shut out Liberty 32-0 this past weekend.

The Mats play Acalanes tonight at 7:00 at Acalanes.
