After concluding last year’s season with a fifth straight NCS title, the Mats Water Polo team has high hopes for the 2010 season.

Throughout the summer most teammates joined the Lamorinda club team to sharpen their skills before the season started.

“Lamo polo improves our team a lot,” said Joey Fabian ‘11. “By playing over the summer we create some team chemistry which will be needed against our tough league schedule.”

Although talented young players like Jack Fellner ‘13 are incorporated into the starting lineup, the team in no way lacks experience. Team captains Nick Deaver ‘11 and Fabian give the team the seniority they will need to be contenders for another NCS title.
“Our team is looking very strong this year,” said Deaver. “We have a talented lineup which makes our outlook on the season promising.”

During the weekend of Sept. 10 the Matadors participated in a tournament in San Jose. They beat Davis High School 11-3 and then narrowly escaped with a 6-4 win in an overtime victory against Jesuit.

In the final game the Mats beat league rival Acalanes 8-7.

“The tournament was a good springboard for the season,” said Chad Zakskorn ‘11. “Beating Acalanes definitely gives us some confidence going into league.”

As in prior years, the DFAL is shaping up to be a tough league. The Mats open league play against Las Lomas at home shortly followed by Acalanes.

Midway through the season the Matadors travel to Southern California to compete in a statewide tournament.

A tough schedule lies ahead but only time will tell if the Mats will persevere and maintain the Miramonte water polo tradition of excellence.
