Women’s Golf Excels

After a successful 2009 season, Miramonte varsity women’s golf is back and looking forward to another victorious year, starting strong at 7-0. Following a Miramonte best sixth place finish at NCS Championships last year, the team has high hopes and expectations for another great season.

The Matadors started with a bang in a tri-match against Acalanes, 250-306, and Alhambra, 250-337, and a separate match with Dougherty Valley, 245-290, both of which Miramonte won.
They are hoping to win league again this year and advance even further in NCS.

After the loss of Coach Jerry Montgomery in 2008, the team has had difficulty finding a permanent coach. This year Jane Kendall joins the coaching staff alongside Jackie Birdsong and Jim Williams.
The team is led by captains Liza Katz ‘11 and Kelsey Williams ‘11.

“We’ve had a lack of consistency with respect to our coaches through the years, but the girls have shown strong commitment to the team,” said Katz. “Since freshman year, we’ve had a strong group of now-seniors who have largely contributed to the team’s stability.”

These aforementioned seniors are Williams, Katz, Lucy O’Melveny ‘11, Danie Albo ‘11, and Marissa Morris ‘11.

“We’ve looked up to the seniors through the years, and as a result, in the transitions without a coach we’ve known what to do to hold the team together,” said Katz.
The team is composed of 10 players: five seniors, two juniors, and three freshmen.

“We’re all friends here. We have great times, but at the same time our team is dominant,” says Jessica Goldstein ‘12.

The Lady Mats beat Campolindo at home on Tuesday, 255-274. They competed against Las Lomas on Wednesday, at home, but results not available at press time.

If all goes well, the team could be looking at an even better mark at NCS than they received last year.
