The men’s varsity soccer team continues the season with an even stronger sense of determination and commitment.

After loser key players Eric Sassano, Michael Pitt, and Trevor Gorham to graduation last year, the new team is excited to reach their goals and prove themselves in league this year.

They lost against Dublin Jan. 14 when a player on the Dublin team scored within the last five minutes, bringing the final score to 2-1.

Co-captains Nick Bhachu ‘12 and Griffin Deutz ‘11 motivate the team in practice, working the team harder than ever. They train every day after school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on not only endurance, but basic game plays and skills.

“The biggest thing we need to work on is bringing all the individual talent on the team together so that we can play as a whole,” said Bhachu.

On Jan. 12 the Matadors beat Alhambra 1-0, an exciting victory for the team.  On Jan. 14 the Matadors lost to Acalanes 2-1 they also lost to Dougherty valley 2-1 on Jan 26.

“As long as we keep working hard and believing, we feel like we can beat any of our league opponents, as long as we play as one,” said Bhachu.

Key players include Bhachu who plays center forward, Deutz a center defender, Mickey Worthington ‘12 an outside defender, Ned Moran ‘12 an outside defender, Taro Kyllonen ‘12 the goalie, along with Anthony Ruiz ‘13, and Jose Gutierrez ‘13, an exchange student who just recently moved here from Mexico.

On Friday, Jan. 28, the team won an exciting game against Las Lomas. Despite trailing 0-1 for most of the game, the team managed to pull out a win. Bhachu scored the tying goal with six minutes left, followed by the winning goal with only 20 seconds to spare.

The team needs to win its remaining league games in order to receive an NCS playoff spot. They play Freemont High tonight at home.
