The Boy’s Water Polo team began the season with a win. On Saturday, Aug. 27 the team scrimmaged St. Francis High School and “beat them pretty handily,” said Captain Charlie Wiser ‘13.

The weekend of Friday, Sept. 16 the boys traveled to Santa Barbara to compete in a tournament. They won fourth place overall after winning two games and losing two. “Santa Barbara was a great way to see where we are. We were pleased to see a lot of the work we have put into practice pay off,” said Captain Kyle Weikert ’12.

On Tuesday, Sept. 13 the boys beat De La Salle 8-4. The annual alumni game was Fri. Sept. 13, and the team lost by 4 goals.
“The alumni game is always fun. Even though they are really good, having the whole mats polo family past and present is very special,” said Weikert.

The team lost key players Aleck Ryner, Nick Deaver and Joey Fabian to graduation last year, but the boys continue to play and practice hard. Many of the members competed with the Lamorinda Water Polo team over the summer.
While head coach James Lathrop was coaching his Junior National Water Polo team in Greece, the Mats were working with coaches Bill Brown, Joey Estrada, Michael Sharf, and Chris Lathrop.

“Overall our team is good at scoring goals. We have a lot of speed and a great counter attack. However we need to improve our communication skills,” said Wiser.

The new great assets to the team include Drew Holland ‘13 in the goal and Amin Anjedani ‘13, Tyler Kirchberg ‘14, and Gabe Ostler ‘14 who are positioned as attackers.

“We really hope to continue Miramonte’s excellence as one of the top teams in the country, win all of our games, place high in the tournaments we compete in and ultimately win NCS,” said Wiser.
The water polo team plays Dougherty Valley home on Wed. Sept. 28 from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. and Alhambra away on Wed. Sept 12 from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.
