Baseball Chasing NCS Bid

Drew Anderson, Staff Writer

The Mats played two vital league games this week as they wrap up the preseason, which will hopefully be followed by an NCS playoff birth. The Mats suffered a tough eight to zero loss against Daugherty Valley on Tuesday, but came back strong to get a nine to eight win against Las Lomas on Thursday.                                                                             Tuesday at Daugherty Valley the Mats were opposed by strong pitching from Daugherty, and struggled to put runs on the board. James Vaccarro 16’ pitched in the Mats loss Thursday, however, was a different story for the Mats, as the bats came alive and they won a nine to eight thriller capped by a walkoff by Brandon Armosino 14’. George McConnell 13’ went three for four in the game and Alex Gutierrez 14’ drove in two runs. Gutierrez also pitched two innings and didn’t allow any runs.                                             “I was pretty nervous about pitching but my teammates provided me with a lot of support and made me believe in myself. We have a great defense so I just threw strikes, let guys hit the ball and let my guys make the plays,” said Gutierrez.                                                                                                                                                                                                         The Mats record now stands at seven and seven and the team will need a few more wins to reach the playoffs.
