Miramonte defeated St. Mary’s High School 36-13 in their first game under the Matadome lights on Friday, Sep. 6 in front of a spirited home crowd.
The Mats came out strong in the first quarter with two unanswered touchdowns; one 22-yard touchdown run by Ray Clark ‘14 followed soon after by a 17-yard pass from Drew Anderson ‘14 to Dominic Paoletti ‘14. By the end of the first the Mats were leading 14-0.
Hwever, in the second quarter St. Mary’s piece together a nice drive that ended in a touchdown to leave them down by only seven. Neither team scored after that and Miramonte headed into halftime with momentum and a 14-7 lead.
Keeping the momentum going, the Mats scored first in the third quarter on a 5-yard run from Clark. St. Mary’s would soon answer with a touchdown, but after a blocked extra point, the Panthers were shut down and would not score again.
On a 62-yard pass in the beginning of the fourth quarter from Anderson to Will Fuller ‘14, the Mats went up 28-13, and easily put the game out of reach.
Miramonte dealt the final blow when brothers Anderson and Ryan Anderson ‘16 connected with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter. On the two point conversion, Clayton Stehr ‘16 received a pass from Steven Shepard ‘14 and added two for the Mats. The defense held up and sealed the 36-13 victory.
Clark, Anderson, and Paoletti all had impressive games. Clark ran for 105 yards, the first 100+ rushing game by one Miramonte player since 2011, and ran for two touchdowns in the victory. Anderson was 18-30 for 337 yards including seven completed passes to Paoletti for 183 yards.
“We definitely showed up in the second half and if we bring that intensity to Analy this Friday we should get the win,” Paoletti said.
Miramonte will travel to Analy on Friday, Sep. 13 in what is expected to be a battle between two explosive offenses.
