Lady Mats Basketball Sets Their Sights On A State Championship

Lady Mats Basketball beat Alameda last Tuesday over Thanksgiving Break in an NCS exhibition game. The Mats dominated all game, scoring endlessly on offense while stuffing the Hornets on defense.

“We came out and did what we always do. We played with a tremendous amount of effort and shared the ball” Sabrina Ionescu ‘16 said.

Following a very successful season last year, the team is hoping for even better results this year. The Mats were placed in the open division, a division made specifically for the best teams in the state. Although they lost the NCS Championships to perennial rival Bishop O’Dowd, the Mats were pleased with their level of play.

Losing only one starter from last year, this year’s team has incredible potential and depth. The sophomore quartet of Ionescu, Uriah Howard ‘16, Keanna Delos Santos ‘16, and Jessie Wilson ‘16 is coming into this season with much more confidence than last year. Bre Alford ‘14, Allison Miller ‘14, Nadine Masarweh, Mariah Seals ‘14, and Megan Reid ‘14 will provide leadership and experience. The team is rounded out with Kaitlin Fenn ‘15 and Ellie Louie ‘17.

Up next, Lady Mats Basketball takes on Redwood on Thursday.
