As public address announcer Steve Harwood announced the Miramonte starting five, the Matadors were gleaming. Winning 82-48, the Lady Mats took on Encinal Friday Feb. 26 at 8 pm. Encinal came off a 21-9 record, good for second in their league behind undefeated Castro Valley.

The Lady Mats got off to a quick 31-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Mats relied heavily on the scoring of senior Sabrina Ionescu. She ended the game with 29 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.“Our main focus was getting off to a quick start. We didn’t want to give them any life going into the rest of the game,” said Ionescu.

Senior Keana De Los Santos also helped with the winning effort by netting five threes and dishing out five assists. She has been on a blazing hot streak in the past few weeks, hitting five threes previously against Pinewood on Feb. 20.

With the win on Feb. 26, the Mats solidified their undefeated history against Encinal. Tonight the Lady Mats take on Marin County league champion Tamalpais at 7:00 for a chance to return to the NCS title game.
