The Miramonte Cross Country team kicked off their season last Tuesday, September 6th at the Monte Vista Invitational. This opening meet is particularly known for its unforgiving heat and steep course. Jonathan Fiero won first place in the senior boys race, with a time of 10:47.3 on the two-mile course. This time put Fiero as the ninth-fastest of all time on the Oak Hill Park course. In the sophomore girls race, Cassy Haskell also destroyed the competition, winning by a landslide at 12:40.93. Haskell’s time is ranked thirteenth of all time on this course. The infamous “Eliminator” hill didn’t stop the senior girls either, with Rosie Cruz finishing in third and Emily Freel not far behind in eighth place. Junior boys James Bull and J.J. Young won fourth and eighth place respectively. In previous years, the temperature during this invitational has reached into the hundreds, but this year’s runners were blessed with milder temperatures, allowing the Matadors to excel at every level. All runners will compete again on Saturday, September 17th at the Nike Invitational in Concord.
