Men’s Basketball Upsets Cougars 69-68

The Miramonte Men’s basketball team upset highly touted rival Campolindo last Saturday night by a score of 69-68. The Mats won on a layup in the final seconds of the game, after coming back from a 23-6 deficit after the first quarter.
The Cougars came out hot, taking a 18-2 lead to begin the game. The Mats struggled on the offensive end and failed to get back on transition which as result lead to them trailing by 17-33 at the half. However, the Mats were able to stage a comeback for the ages, winning the game on a layup by Drew Anderson ‘14 with 11 seconds left.
Anderson had an excellent game, scoring 34 and also junior Jake Linares added 21 points of his own.
“Campolindo and Miramonte have been rivals for decades now, so it’s a brutal game from tip off to the final buzzer,” junior Jake Lineres said. “I think our team got shoved on our heels the first half and struggled deeply, until we came out in the second half and stepped on their throats. It’s always fun playing against a good team (that we respect) and coming back from a huge deficit. I love getting rebounds and I know Scooby loves his snacks; so, it was definitely one for the books.”
A rematch will take Feb. 18 at Campolindo High School. The winner of the game will likely claim the league title, as the Cougars and Mats reside at first and second place in league currently.
“The crowd was amazing and the Sixth Man Nation was LIVE!” junior Jackson Wagner said. “We were down big early, but we never gave up and chipped away possession by possession and began to execute on offense. Right when the game ended we got mobbed by sixth man students and celebrated to cap off the incredible night. I can’t wait until we meet the Cougs again.”
