Do you ever see students walk into their 3rd, 4th, or 5th period with a muffin or bagel? Do you know how hard the people behind the counter work to be able to hand you food within a few seconds?
During the start of the school year, Miramonte students fall back into their usual routines and are back to picking up their lunch from the cafeteria. A new year means students meeting new people, whether that be staff or students. As students approach the end of class, they begin to look forward to lunch, counting down the seconds until they can fill their stomachs and socialize, but often overlook the people who serve and prepare the food.
Common foods at brunch include chocolate or banana muffins, savory bagels, cereal, breakfast burritos, and more. For lunch, some of the many foods they offer are pizza, burrito bowls, different styles of salads such as Caesar or Asian salad, and sandwiches. Each meal comes with a complimentary cheese stick and fruit.
Some students work in the cafeteria in exchange for volunteer hours, while some work in exchange of compensation. They often look for people to help them, who would receive $15 per hour and gain work experience. When it comes to preparing all of the food, Head Chef Josie Worth organizes ingredients, counts students, and plans meals for lunch and brunch.
“For breakfast and brunch total, we sell between 400-500 [meals], and for lunch, we sell almost 400,” Worth said. At the end of the day, the staff donates the leftover food to a non-profit organization called White Pony Express, in Concord, California on a mission to eliminate hunger and poverty by delivering food to all who need it.
As you walk into the cafeteria every day to get your daily bagel or salad, acknowledge the workers who work for you to be able to have easy access to the food. Stop by the cafeteria during lunch or brunch to try all the food that our staff work hard every day, and put effort into making for the students.
