On Friday, May 16, Miramonte music classes hosted the Spring Music Concert in the theater. The performance featured the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Musical Theater Workshop, and Jazz Band. The concert was free to attend, and audience members witnessed some of Miramonte’s most musically inclined students in their element.
All four music classes spent weeks preparing for the concert. Most classes prepared a variety of songs, then focused on two to three to actually perform at the concert.
“We spent this past semester learning various choral songs, and then when we got closer to the concert, we picked our favorites and honed in on practicing those,” junior and Musical Theater and Chamber singers member, Noah Thaler said.
The classes themselves ranged in type of performance. For example, Musical Theater Workshop performed the song “I’ve got a Dream” from Tangled, and added blocking and choreography as a part of the theatrical aspect of their class. Chamber singers, on the other hand, performed a larger variety of songs and focused on layered harmonies as opposed to dance components. “For chamber choir, we performed ‘And So It Goes,’ by Billy Joel; ‘Time,’ by Jennifer Lucy Cook; ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ by Kelly Clarkson, and an arrangement called ‘Imagine Me’ by Kirk Franklin,” sophomore Mia Cortesio, who is in both Musical Theater Workshop and Chamber choir, said.
Alongside the vocal performance, Jazz Band provided an instrumental-based show. Similar to Concert Choir and Musical Theater, Jazz Band spent the weeks leading up to the concert practicing what they were going to perform.
“We prepared our songs for three weeks prior to the concert itself, and were so excited to share music with the rest of the Miramonte community,” junior and Jazz Band member Alex Lippi said.
As the school year comes to a close, May 16 marked the final time these performers will take the stage this year, and the last time the programs’ seniors would perform with Miramonte.
“I loved seeing the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Musical Theater, and Jazz Band all come together and perform together. It’s always really cool seeing the entire music department in one show,” Thaler said.
