Roblox is one of the largest online gaming platforms in the world. It is a digital space where users can play millions of games created by others, customize avatars, or create their own games. In previous years, Roblox has been considered a safe platform for all ages. There is no significant age verification within the app, allowing for anyone to pose at any age.
However, recently, concerns have arisen about whether Roblox should be considered safe for everyone. In April and Aug. 2025, Roblox was sued by two families and the Florida Attorney General’s Office for “perpetuating an environment where sexual predators ‘thrive, unite, hunt, and victimize kids’”(CNN).
With many concerned about the safety of their children, one person took initiative to manage the problem on his own. Youtuber Schlep dedicated time to exposing predators on the Roblox platform long before the lawsuits began, leading to many individuals being arrested for alleged grooming. Schlep would pose as a minor and lure in predators on the platform, then lead them off onto other chats off of Roblox. He would then set up in-person meetings, arresting the predators alongside the police. This led to Roblox banning Schlep from the platform.
According to Chicago 5 News Channel, Roblox banned him for not following safety rules, including moving conversations to different platforms. They sent cease-and-desist letters, letters that are a formal demand for an individual or entity to stop a specific activity that infringes on another’s rights. Many are upset with Schlep’s ban and are protesting: “FREE SCHLEP.”
In April 2025, Roblox was sued by multiple families in Texas and Florida. Roblox was sued by the Dolman Law Group for a mother and her 8-year-old son for allowing her child to be sexually exploited on the platform (Dolman Law Group). In this story, an adult woman had been sexually exploiting a little boy, posing as a child on Roblox. The woman gained his trust and groomed him, later on asking him to exchange explicit photos.
The situation ended with the Dolman Law Group filing a lawsuit against Roblox. The lawsuit contended that the platform is poorly designed for safety, with open chat rooms, weak age checks, and no meaningful parental consent, giving predators on the platform easy access to chat with children (Dolman Law Group). This case is one out of many, showing how Roblox continued to overlook its weaknesses, allowing young children to be exploited and harmed.
“I know of people who have unfortunately had dangerous interactions online,” sophomore Naomi Snaith said.
On Apr. 16, 2025, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody issued a subpoena to Roblox. A subpoena is a legal document that demands a person or system provide documents of evidence relevant to the prosecution. In Roblox’s case, the corporation had to provide documents that had information on its safety policies and practices regarding children.
Every student at Miramonte who plays on the platform is risking their safety. Many have begun to notice the danger while they play. Sophomore Alexis “Ellie” Letulle has been playing Roblox since she was five years old, and has also begun to notice the lack of safety regulations for children.
“When I was nine, I was able to buy Robux without needing my parents’ consent, and I [could] change my age whenever I wanted,” Letulle said. Letulle has begun to notice how children are essentially becoming targets on the platform, as well as how Roblox is not putting sufficient effort into fixing its problems.
“The fact that Roblox puts more effort into banning people like Schlep who paint the platform in a bad light rather than focusing its resources towards the basic problem is disgusting,” Letulle said.
Roblox is facing repercussions that have been a long time coming; including an abundance of lawsuits, government investigations, and social network backlash, forcing it to take initiative to address the problems with its platform. Whether they can get themselves out of it is dependent on whether they can fix their safety policies and create a safe space for all children to play without worries. Many other countries have taken initiative to protect their children from the platform, going so far as to ban it within the country. Though this is not the case for the United States, it could be a future possibility.
