As students get settled into the beginning of the school year and adapt to their new classes, teachers, and friends, Leadership has been planning the first dance of the school year: Homecoming.
In preparation for the week of festivities, Leadership is working tirelessly to make it memorable by planning, budgeting, and decorating. “We picked the theme at the end of last school year and have been working since the beginning of this year to plan hallways, decorations, and vendors for the dance,” senior and ASB Treasurer Katie Barmmer said. The Grand Prix theme was announced just a few weeks ago in honor of the impending Formula 1 Grand Prix race. Members of Leadership have been putting lots of time and effort into making Homecoming Week enjoyable and inclusive to all.
To express Matador pride, and dress out to the Grand Prix theme, each day leading up to the Saturday night dance is a different spirit day. “Monday starts with pajama day, then a black and white dress-out Tuesday, followed by a yellow, red, or green Wednesday, a “backward” Thursday, and finally, a class-colors Friday to end the week with the rally. “Students seem to be more excited to come to school! A fun outfit or a lunchtime activity can be an easy way to motivate students to make it to school,” math teacher Samantha Holcomb said.
Friday night lights bring an exciting energy to the Miramonte community with homecoming week being a white-out themed football game against Benicia High who will travel across the Bay to compete in the Matadome. “The Homecoming game is special because not only is the whole community there supporting our team, but the alumni as well,” junior and football player Justin Jalowqeic said. “The team absolutely plays better when the stands are energetic. The loud atmosphere hypes us all up and gives us another reason to play our best.” To continue the tradition, the Homecoming game includes a halftime powder toss for the student section.
Many students’ highlight of the week is the Homecoming dance set to commence on Saturday night, from 7-9 pm where there will be various activities such as music, games, dancing, food, and drinks. The whole week poses as an excellent opportunity for the classes to bond and for Leadership to show off all their hard work.
