When most think of Tiger Woods, an American professional golfer, the first things that come to mind include the 638 weeks of dominating at world number one, his infamous fist pump, and the overall mental toughness he displayed throughout his game. Cited by many as the best golfer of all time. “I have looked up to Tiger Woods in the past. I feel like he made golf really popular for the younger kids, because most of the time people thought Golf was just for older people,” First year at Miramonte High School and member of the Miramonte Women’s Golf Team, Campbell Sabares said.
While these aspects of Woods have greatly impacted golf history, his reputation has been repeatedly fractured due to his involvement in numerous scandals. He is generally not watched and admired for moral guidance, but rather for his “art”: the beauty of his golf game and mastery of the sport. “He has taught me to always be calm and know that not every round is going to be perfect,” Sabares said. However, while many consider him a remarkable golfer and athlete, his career along with his many controversies presents a difficult question: can we admire the “art” while acknowledging the “artist” is a deeply flawed individual? Regardless of his controversies, Woods should still be admired and respected in the golf industry for his outstanding athletic abilities, but not for all of his moral decisions.
17 years ago, Elin Nordegren, Woods’ wife, caught him having several affairs. Then, shortly after his wife discovered him, he crashed his SUV, damaging surrounding property. Then, only eight years later, in 2017, he was arrested on suspicion of a DUI and pleaded guilty to reckless driving. Later, in 2021, he crashed his SUV once again, suffering major injuries. Later, as recently as March of this year, 2026, he was once again involved in a car crash; it is suspected that he was driving under the influence of drugs or other substances. As a result of his actions, many have begun to question Woods’ morality as well as his value of the safety of others along with himself.
While one’s athletic achievements are independent of their personal decisions, Woods’ unethical actions complicate whether he should be admired. His successes on the golf course reflect talent, discipline, and dedication, but his controversies, such as DUIs and cheating scandals, show a different side of his character which should not be praised. “My opinions of him since the most recent incident have shifted a little because of what he’s done, it’s not okay, and it’s important to acknowledge what he has been doing. But on the golf side of it, I definitely look at him the same, as a strong player who brought the love for golf to the younger generation” Sabares said.
On the contrary, outside of the golf world, Woods has contributed a great deal to supporting underserved youth. He founded the TGR Foundation, which raises millions of dollars to fund STEM-focused educational programs, healthcare, and welfare for underprivileged children. This has impacted millions of children’ s lives. The fact that Woods’ has positively impacted so many children’s lives proves that he should not be solely defined by his lowest moments. He should be recognized as an individual who has made several significant mistakes, which should not be justified or forgotten, but also somebody who is devoted to helping others in need.
Woods has contributed a great deal to the golf community along with aiding underserved children, while at the same time has been involved in a multitude of scandals, complicating how he should be viewed and regarded. In this case, it is necessary to separate the “art” from the “artist”. This phrase is a philosophical debate about whether one’s work value is connected to their morality. Separating the “art “ from the “artist” in this case would mean to continue respecting Woods for his outstanding performance in Golf, as well as his empowering foundation, but not justifying his scandals and unsafe choices.
Woods’ has made certain mistakes several times, proving he is currently unable to change his ways, and therefore he should not be admired in all aspects of life. He undeniably has incredible achievements in golf as well as helping underprivileged children, therefore it is important to acknowledge that Woods, like many others, has different sides to him, and in this case it is worth separating the “art” from the “artist,”. We can appreciate the work and everlasting impact Woods has made on the golf and education industry while still not defending or forgetting his wrongdoings.
