Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, Bad Bunny, is a 31 year old Puerto Rican singer, song writer, and rapper. He first gained attention in 2016 from posting on SongCloud with his songs “Diles” (Tell them) and “Soy Peor” (I’m worse). He is very popular in South America and other places around the world. He recently won a grammy for best album for “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” (I should have taken more photos) and best Urban Music and Best Global Music Performance for “EoO”
The half time show performer at the 2026 Superbowl, getting about 128.2 million viewers. Previous to his recent successes there was lots of political and social media debate if he should be performing the half time show. Many Americans did not support his performance during the Superbowl due to his criticism of the U.S. President Donald Trump and the government for their immigration policies. Ocasio’s comments caused backlash from Trump’s administration and its supporters. However, the NFL decided to stand by their decision and keep Bad Bunny as the performer. His performance was entirely in Spanish symbolizing his Puertorican pride.
Bad Bunny opened his performance in a sugar cane field as he sang his famous song “Titi Me Pregunto” (Titi asked me). Later, Bad Bunny performed “El Apagón” while he climbed a ladder, highlighting frustrations with Puerto Rican Blackouts. During the show, a couple gets legally married onstage, with Bad Bunny acting like the witness. Dancers climbed fake electrical poles pretending to be workers representing Puerto Rican resilience.Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin were featured as guests in this performance, signifying their unity. He ended his performance with “Seguimos aquí” (We are still here), while showing the message “The only thing more powerful than hate is love” on the big screen.
The All American Halftime show was streamed as an alternate to the Superbowl half time show for the people boycotting the Superbowl’s show. It was organized by Turning Point USA. Performing there were: Kid Rock, Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, and Gabby Barrett. According to the New York Times this show attracted about 6.1 million viewers.
After the show there were a lot of mixed opinions. Some people were upset he was only singing in Spanish, and others didn’t want a “non-American citizen” doing the halftime show. However, Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and all born in Puerto Rico are considered U.S. citizens ever since the John Shafroth Act of 1917.
Bad Bunny wore Zara for his half time show, a very affordable brand, promoting the idea that anyone can wear it. Bad Bunny has also been known to be bold with some of his choices, frequently wearing dresses or skirts in his music videos and events. Most notable was the 2022 Jacquemus campaign and Met Gala. He continues to challenge gender norms. Bad Bunny has received both positive and negative public responses to his fashion choices from the media and fans. For example, he wears a dress in Yo Perreo Sola music video, to support women’s empowerment, female independence, the LGBTQ+ community.
“I think that Bad Bunny’s bold and different outfit choices have affected not just me, but so many people around the world,” first year Reese Solok said. “I find it so cool how he isn’t afraid of what people think about him, and how he goes above and beyond to represent his culture, and what he believes in.”
Miramonte students seem to support Bad Bunny and enjoy the performance.
“I personally loved the halftime show because it was exciting, and moving in many different ways,” Sokol said.
