On Thursday, Jan. 29, lunch was extended by 15 minutes to account for the annual Elective Fair that took place in the big gym. Electives including 3D Art, Public Speaking, and Drama all had booths run by the teacher of that class, students taking that class, or both. The Elective Fair is held so that students can see their elective options for the following year.
The French booth was run by Kathryn Osmer, who teaches French. “It’s a combination of language and cultural anthropology, because with the French language it’s touching cultures all around the world, so to get insight into how people celebrate with their daily life is amazing,” Osmer said.
Miramonte has a broad selection of electives, and first-year Vanessa Carrington is interested in taking the Foods elective. “I love sweet treats, and it would be fun to learn how to make more of them,” Carrington said. Some skills that are learned in the Foods 1 class is understanding basic nutrition, sanitation practices, and food preparation techniques. In the class there are also field trips Foods 1 students go on, including one to San Francisco.
Senior Livia Segall was one of the students running the booth at the Crafts/3D Art class. “It taught me new skills I never thought I would learn,” “It’s such a good break in your schedule, and it’s just a very calming, amazing class,” Segall said. In Crafts 1, students learn how to work with metal and with pottery and sculpting. This class also counts toward the visual performing art (VPA) credit.
“Just being in the Mirador, being able to run the class and being able to write the whole class period just sounds really interesting because I like writing,” first-year Amanda King said.
Picking classes and electives becomes increasingly tricky because students are thinking about their future more seriously. These stands can be helpful to students who are having a harder time choosing what they would like to take.
Juniors’ schedules are due Feb. 2, sophomores’ schedules are due Feb. 3-4, first-years’ schedules are due Feb. 5-6, and eighth graders’ schedules are due Feb. 5.
