If you thought “Wuthering Heights” was just a dusty old book, think again. “Wuthering Heights” was directed by Emerald Fennell and debuted on Feb 13, and is an adaptation of the book “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë, released in December of 1843. The new movie brings the gothic moors and all the drama straight to the screen in an intense, emotional way. The movie follows three main characters: Catherine Earnshaw, played by Margot Robbie; Heathcliff, played by Jacob Elordi; and Edgar, played by Shazad Latif. Heathcliff, an orphan, is taken in by the Earnshaw family, and his intense, often destructive relationship with Catherine drives the drama across generations, filled with heartbreak, betrayal, and emotional twists. “Wuthering Heights” is far from a feel-good romance and will probably have you in tears, but honestly, that’s what makes it so memorable.
The story itself is complicated, but the movie handles the adaptation well. There is no sugarcoating of the characters’ flaws or the consequences of their choices, which makes it feel very authentic. Most of the movie moves pretty slowly, but it works to build tension and let all the emotions land.
Visually, the movie feels very gothic. Each section of the movie is stormy and dramatic; the sets are very detailed yet raw, and every shot feels designed to reflect the story’s dark, emotional world.
The performances were what really made the movie memorable. Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff is intense and unpredictable, while Margot Robbie’s Catherine manages to have both independence and vulnerability. The chemistry between them is electric, and every scene they share is filled with intense tension that keeps me hooked.
I would definitely recommend this movie, but only if you’re ready to get pulled into an emotional rollercoaster. I would especially recommend this to someone who has read the book to see the characters they have connected with on paper come to life. It’s very dramatic and intense in a good way, so if you love stories with a dark twist and a heartbreak, with lots of “omg” moments, “Wuthering Heights” is definitely the movie for you. It is also very similar to the movie Pride and Prejudice.
“I thought the movie was kind of boring at first, and it took a while to get good, but it was definitely really sad, and I would recommend it to anyone,” sophomore Mia Dhingra said. “I think the movie was good, but not great, because it was kind of confusing and dark, but I liked it because of all the tension and plot twists… I would only recommend it if you are really into romance movies,” sophomore Ava London said.
Overall, the 2026 “Wuthering Heights” movie was a great watch, and most have said it is a great representation of the book, as well as an emotional and intense love story.
