On Oct 9, 2025, the Lamorinda community gathered online to join EBMUD’s online meeting regarding the Lafayette Reservoir tower. One of the main takeaways was that the Lafayette Reservoir area will be under construction and unavailable for use between key construction periods. The Reservoir, specifically the water tower will be getting a needed remodel due to safety concerns.
The height of the tower will be shortened by 40 feet to fit the height of the dam to prevent breakage ito the tower case of an earthquake. There will be minor tree work and temporary widening of the access road. This $14 million project is funded by EBMUD rate payers and approved by the California Division of Safety of Dams (DSOD).
With past dam failures, DSOD has increased regulations on dam construction to prevent future failures. Because of these regulations, it was discovered that the dam itself is 40 feet too high and needs to be shortened for public safety.
This project is increasingly anticipated, since without it, Lafayette residents are put at risk in the case of an earthquake. The concern about the needed construction has increased recently with the rise of earthquakes in the area, and it is vital because of this. The Reservoir Tower controls the drainage of the reservoir and the water level. In the case of an earthquake, there is a high probability that the bottom would collapse under an intense earthquake. DSOD categorizes the risk downstream of Lafayette as “extremely high.” People have created other options over the years, but shortening the tower stands as the most viable and safest option.
The rough timeline is as follows, with the closing of the reservoir during key construction periods: Summer 2025 (construction planning), Fall 2025 (site preparation), Summer 2026 (demolition and construction), Fall 2027 (project completion).
Residents are awaiting construction and look forward to a safer reservoir. “Having this area to be outside with my family has been a lifesaver. I am so excited that ensuring that the space and the streets around it are safe for the sake of all of us in the area,” a Miramonte student’s parent said.
The Lafayette Reservoir is a pillar of the community. “I’ve personally enjoyed the reservoir throughout my childhood. Most especially in the park or just going for a walk. Recently, I’ve gone to the Reservoir’s 10k with my dad and loved it,” an anonymous student said. The Lafayette Reservoir is known for its views and hiking trails that allow residents to spend time outside with easy access to outdoor activities. While it may be under development for a while, residents await its renovation to make the surrounding area a safer place.
